Beresheet

Lunar Lander

Beresheet was a demonstrator lunar lander and probe operated by the Israeli nonprofit SpaceIL together with Israel Aerospace Industries, intended to land a small robotic spacecraft on the Moon. Its aims included promoting careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics among young people, and delivering a magnetometer, a time capsule and a laser retroreflector to the lunar surface. The lander gyroscopes failed on April 11, 2019, causing its main engine to shut off, and Beresheet crashed onto the Moon rather than completing a soft landing.
