SpaceIL is an Israeli private nonprofit association established in 2011 that competed in the Google Lunar X Prize contest to land a spacecraft on the Moon as a private organization. It launched its Beresheet lander on 22 February 2019, which entered lunar orbit on 4 April 2019, but the lander crashed during the final stage of its landing attempt on 11 April 2019, making Israel the seventh country to reach lunar orbit and the fourth to attempt a soft landing on the Moon after the Soviet Union, the United States and China. SpaceIL announced plans for a second mission, Beresheet 2, two days after the failed landing, though that mission was suspended in 2025 for lack of funding.
