Zond 5

Space Probe

Zond 5 was a spacecraft of the Soviet Union Zond program that traveled around the Moon on a circumlunar trajectory in September 1968 and became the first Moon mission to carry living creatures and return safely to Earth. Its passengers, the first terrestrial organisms to fly beyond low Earth orbit and to the vicinity of the Moon, included two Russian tortoises along with fruit fly eggs and plants.
