SpaceX Dragon 2

Crewed Spacecraft

SpaceX Dragon 2 is the second generation of the Dragon capsule built by SpaceX, flown as the crewed Crew Dragon and as the Cargo Dragon variant. The crewed spacecraft is about 8.1 metres tall and 4.0 metres across, has a mass of about 12.5 tonnes and carries up to four people. It is launched on a Falcon 9 rocket, manoeuvres in orbit with 16 Draco thrusters, uses eight SuperDraco engines for launch escape, and is partially reusable. Its first flight, the uncrewed Demo-1 mission, launched on 2 March 2019 and docked itself to the International Space Station. A Crew Dragon capsule was destroyed in April 2019 during a ground test of its abort thrusters, which delayed the first crewed flight. The Demo-2 mission then carried two NASA astronauts to the station in 2020 and restored American crewed launches after the Space Shuttle was retired. The craft flies under NASA's Commercial Crew Program and is operated by SpaceX.
