Luna 21, also called Lunik 21, was an uncrewed Soviet Luna program mission that landed on the Moon in 1973 and deployed the second Soviet lunar rover, Lunokhod 2. Its objectives included collecting images of the lunar surface, testing the feasibility of astronomical observations from the Moon, performing laser ranging experiments with Earth, observing solar X-rays, measuring local magnetic fields, and studying the mechanical properties of the lunar surface material.
