Luna 1

Space Probe

Luna 1, also known as Mechta, was the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Moon, the first to leave Earth orbit, and the first to be placed into orbit around the Sun. It was launched in 1959 as part of the Soviet Union Luna programme, and though it had been intended to impact the Moon, it instead passed by and continued into heliocentric orbit.
