Viktor Patsayev

Soviet Union and Russia

Viktor Patsayev was a Soviet cosmonaut and engineer who flew as a research engineer on the Soyuz 11 mission in June 1971, becoming the first person to operate a telescope in space during the crews stay aboard the Salyut 1 space station. He died along with crewmates Georgy Dobrovolsky and Vladislav Volkov when their Soyuz capsule depressurized during reentry, a disaster that led to significant redesigns of the Soyuz spacecraft and a requirement for cosmonauts to wear pressure suits during launch and landing.
