A modular space station operated in low Earth orbit from 1986 to 2001, first by the Soviet Union and later by the Russian Federation. The first continuously inhabited modular station, it was a key precursor to the International Space Station and was deliberately deorbited on 23 March 2001.

Mir spans the 1991 handover: operated first under the Soviet space program from its 1986 launch, then by Russia's Roscosmos (renamed from the Russian Federal Space Agency in 2015) after the Soviet Union's December 1991 dissolution, through deorbit in 2001.
