A Soviet and later Russian reusable spacecraft program developed as a response to the American Space Shuttle, authorized by a Central Committee and Council of Ministers decree on 17 February 1976 and managed by NPO Molniya under designer Gleb Lozino-Lozinskiy. The Buran orbiter flew one successful uncrewed spaceflight in November 1988, launched atop the Energia rocket, before the program was cancelled in 1993 amid the Soviet Union's collapse and the loss of funding.
