The sixth and final flight of the Soviet Vostok program, and the first human spaceflight to carry a woman, cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. Tereshkova completed 48 orbits of the Earth over almost three days, and the mission's data helped establish how the female body responds to spaceflight.
