Early Crewed Spaceflight Milestone Missions

Capsule Beneath a Parachute

The programs and individual flights that first proved crewed spaceflight itself and its early capabilities: the American Mercury and Gemini programs, the Soviet Vostok flights that carried the first human and the first woman into space, and the joint Apollo-Soyuz Test Project that first docked the two nations' crewed spacecraft. Belongs here: a crewed mission or program whose defining significance is an early, foundational milestone of human spaceflight rather than a sustained lunar, station or shuttle program. Does not belong here: an Apollo or Artemis lunar mission, grouped under Crewed Lunar Program Missions, or a space station or shuttle program, grouped under Space Station and Space Shuttle Programs.
