The branch of applied physics that describes how objects move under gravity in orbit around a larger body, governing everything from a satellite's path around Earth to a probe's trajectory across the solar system. It rests on Kepler's laws of planetary motion and Newton's law of universal gravitation.

Newton's Principia Mathematica (1687) established the general laws of motion and gravitation the field rests on; Kepler's laws (1609) preceded it, and the field was formalized as a named discipline, astrodynamics, only in the 1930s under Samuel Herrick. No single founding year is cleaner than Newton's publication.
