The Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center is a Moscow based manufacturer of spacecraft and space launch systems, including the Proton and Rokot rockets and the Russian modules of Mir and the International Space Station. Its origins trace to a 1916 automobile factory at Fili in Moscow that shifted to aircraft production and, after a design bureau joined in 1951, to rocket technology from 1959 onward, producing every Soviet space station including Mir. The Salyut Design Bureau split off in 1988 and rejoined in a 1993 merger to form the present organization, which employs about 43,500 people and is named for Soviet minister Mikhail Khrunichev.
