GITAI is a space robotics company founded in Tokyo in July 2016 by Sho Nakanose and Kenichi Usami, building robotic arms and general purpose robots intended to carry out labor in space at a fraction of the cost of a human astronaut. The robots, ranging from one meter to ten meters in length, are designed for on-orbit tasks such as inspection, repair and assembly of satellites and space stations. The company name means cybernetic body in Japanese; GITAI began in Tokyo and later opened a headquarters in Torrance, California, becoming a United States incorporated company in late 2023 while continuing its Japan origin operations.
