Viking 2 was an American Mars mission spacecraft consisting of an orbiter and lander nearly identical to Viking 1. The lander operated on the Martian surface for 1,316 days, or 1,281 sols, before its batteries failed in 1980, while the orbiter functioned until July 25, 1978, returning about 16,000 images from 706 orbits of Mars. The orbiter was built by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the lander by Martin Marietta.
