Surveyor 3 was the third lander of the American uncrewed Surveyor program sent to explore the lunar surface, and the second of the program to land successfully, touching down in 1967. It was the first Surveyor mission to carry a surface soil sampling scoop, which it used to test the mechanical properties of the lunar surface material.
