Skylab was the United States' first space station, launched and operated by NASA and occupied for about 24 weeks between May 1973 and February 1974 across three crews. It was constructed from a repurposed Saturn V third stage converted into an orbital workshop by McDonnell Douglas Corporation, and it also carried a solar observatory and hundreds of experiments, becoming the world's second space station after the Soviet Salyut 1.
