Ranger 1

Space Probe

Ranger 1 was a prototype spacecraft launched as part of the American Ranger program of uncrewed space missions. Its primary purpose was to test the performance of the functions and parts needed for later lunar and planetary missions, with a secondary objective of studying particles and fields in the space environment. A launch vehicle malfunction left the spacecraft in low Earth orbit rather than the high Earth orbit that had been planned, so it was able to complete only part of its intended mission.
