Opportunity, also known as MER-B, was a robotic rover active on Mars from 2004 until 2018. Launched as part of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover program, it landed in Meridiani Planum on January 25, 2004, three weeks after its twin rover Spirit, and went on to operate for 5,111 sols, traveling 45.16 kilometers across the Martian surface, far exceeding its planned 90-sol mission. The rover was built by NASA contractor Boeing.
