MESSENGER

Space Probe

MESSENGER was a NASA robotic space probe that orbited the planet Mercury between 2011 and 2015, studying its chemical composition, geology and magnetic field. The name is a backronym for Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging, and also a reference to the messenger god Mercury of Roman mythology. It was the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury, following an earlier NASA probe, Mariner 10, that had only flown past the planet decades before.
