Mars Global Surveyor

Space Probe

Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) was an American robotic space probe developed by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, launched on November 7, 1996, and operating in orbit around Mars from 1997 to 2006. It was a global mapping mission examining the entire planet from its ionosphere down through the atmosphere to the surface. As part of the wider Mars Exploration Program, it also performed atmospheric monitoring for other orbiters during their own aerobraking and helped identify candidate landing sites for later Mars rovers and landers.
