Lunar Prospector

Space Probe

Lunar Prospector was a NASA spacecraft, the third mission of the Discovery program, that orbited the Moon for about nineteen months in 1998 and 1999. From a low polar orbit it mapped the composition of the lunar surface, including deposits of hydrogen, measured the Moon magnetic and gravity fields, and studied lunar outgassing events. The mission ended on July 31, 1999, when controllers deliberately crashed the orbiter into a crater near the lunar south pole.
