Deep Space 1 was a NASA technology demonstration spacecraft launched as part of the New Millennium Program, created to test a set of advanced spacecraft technologies rather than to pursue a specific science return as its primary goal. During its mission the probe flew past the asteroid Braille and later the comet Borrelly, returning images and data from both encounters between 1998 and 2001.
