Venera 9 was a Soviet uncrewed space mission to Venus, consisting of an orbiter and a lander, launched on June 8, 1975. The orbiter became the first spacecraft ever to orbit Venus, while the lander became the first spacecraft to return images from the surface of another planet. The combined spacecraft had a mass of about 4,936 kilograms, among the heaviest interplanetary probes flown up to that time.
