Venera 13

Space Probe

Venera 13 was a Soviet space probe that landed on the surface of Venus on March 1, 1982, as part of the Soviet Union Venera program of Venus exploration. It returned the first color photographs ever taken of the Venusian surface and survived for about two hours in the planet extreme heat and crushing atmospheric pressure before its instruments failed, a working lifetime far longer than its designers had planned for. The lander also carried a soil drill and an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer that analyzed the chemical composition of Venusian rock.
