Lucy

Space Probe

Lucy is a NASA robotic space probe launched on October 16, 2021, on a twelve year mission to study the Jupiter Trojan asteroids, two swarms of small bodies that share Jupiter orbit around the Sun. It is the first spacecraft ever sent to explore the Trojan asteroids, planned to fly past a main belt asteroid and several Trojans, studying their surface composition and geology to learn more about the early solar system, since the Trojans are thought to be remnants left over from its formation. The spacecraft is named after the fossilized human ancestor Lucy, whose discovery similarly illuminated an early chapter of human origins.
