CAPSTONE

Space Probe

CAPSTONE is a NASA lunar orbiter built to test and verify the orbital stability calculated for the once-planned Lunar Gateway space station, using a small twelve-unit CubeSat launched on June 28, 2022. It reached lunar orbit on November 14, 2022, and also tested a navigation system that measures its own position relative to NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter without relying on ground stations. The spacecraft completed its primary mission in a near-rectilinear halo orbit by May 2023 and continued operating afterward in an extended technology-testbed phase.
