CAPSTONE Mission

Robotic Lunar Exploration Missions

CAPSTONE, the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment, is a lunar orbiter mission that tests and verifies the calculated orbital stability planned for the now canceled Lunar Gateway space station. The spacecraft is a 12-unit CubeSat that also tests a navigation system measuring its position relative to NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter without relying on ground stations. It was launched on June 28, 2022, arrived in lunar orbit on November 14, 2022, and completed its primary mission of six months in a near-rectilinear halo orbit on May 18, 2023, after which it continued experiments in an enhanced mission phase.
