Luna 3 was a Soviet spacecraft launched in 1959 as part of the Luna programme, and the first mission ever to photograph the far side of the Moon. It was the third Soviet space probe sent toward the vicinity of the Moon, and its never-before-seen views of the Moon far side caused wide excitement when they were published, leading to the creation of a tentative atlas of that hidden hemisphere.
