Yelena Kondakova is the third Soviet or Russian woman to fly in space and the first woman to make a long-duration spaceflight. She launched on Soyuz TM-20 on October 4, 1994, and spent five months aboard the Mir space station before returning in March 1995. Her second flight was as a mission specialist on the United States Space Shuttle Atlantis during STS-84 in May 1997, and she remained the last Russian woman in space until Yelena Serova flew in 2014.
