Alexander Volkov is a Soviet and Russian cosmonaut who flew three missions to the Mir space station between 1985 and 1991, commanding two of them, including his final mission that launched carrying a Soviet crew and, due to the collapse of the Soviet Union during the flight, returned to Earth in a country that no longer existed under that name. On that same mission he flew alongside French astronaut Jean-Loup Chretien during a joint French-Soviet spaceflight.
