The theorists, engineers and program leaders who made spaceflight possible without themselves flying: rocketry and space-science theorists, spacecraft and rocket engineers, mission control and program leadership, and the computing and guidance pioneers whose work made powered, guided flight possible. A pioneer is remembered for enabling spaceflight rather than practicing it personally, which is what separates this band from Astronauts and Cosmonauts.
