French aviation pioneer and engineer who became one of the founding theorists of astronautics in the 1910s through 1930s. He coined the French term astronautique, derived the rocket equation independently of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, and endowed the REP-Hirsch Prize, the first international award for spaceflight research. His 1930 book L'Astronautique was among the first serious technical treatments of spaceflight.
