Arkady Ilyich Ostashev (1925 to 1998) was a Soviet and Russian engineer and scientist who spent more than five decades in the design bureau that grew out of Sergei Korolev's OKB-1, today the Energia corporation. He studied at the Moscow Aviation Institute, where he drew on German rocketry documents for a diploma project on a composite rocket, and met Korolev in 1947, who guided that project. His career centred on testing: he wrote the volume on missile testing in the preliminary design of the R-7 rocket, took part in the launches of the first artificial Earth satellite and the first cosmonaut, and in 1975 headed testing of the rocket and space systems for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. He held a candidate of technical sciences degree, taught as a docent at the Moscow Aviation Institute from 1961, and received the Lenin Prize in 1960 and the State Prize in 1979. He wrote or co-wrote over 200 scientific works and inventions.
