An observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, operated by the University of Chicago from its 1897 opening, home to the 40-inch Yerkes refractor, the largest refracting telescope ever put to regular scientific use. Often called the birthplace of modern astrophysics for the theoretical and observational work carried out there in the early twentieth century.
