A NASA infrared space telescope launched in 2009 to survey the entire sky, discovering large numbers of previously unknown asteroids, comets and brown dwarfs. After its primary mission and coolant were exhausted it was reactivated in 2013 as NEOWISE, a dedicated survey for asteroids and comets that could pose an impact hazard to Earth.
