Belgium's national astronomical observatory, founded in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in 1826 by King William I of the Netherlands at the petition of astronomer Adolphe Quetelet, and relocated to its present site in the Uccle district of Brussels between 1883 and 1890. Operated by the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office, it has discovered 13 minor planets, has hosted the World Data Center for the Sunspot Index since 1981, and once housed a 100-centimeter Zeiss reflector that ranked among the largest telescopes in the world in the early twentieth century.
