The principal astronomical observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, founded in 1839 near Saint Petersburg and known in the nineteenth century for exceptionally precise stellar position measurements. Heavily damaged during the Second World War, it was rebuilt after 1945 and remains a working research center.
