Japan's national center for astronomical research, formed in 1988 and operating facilities across the country and abroad, including the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii and radio and solar observing stations within Japan. It coordinates Japan's contribution to major international projects such as the Atacama Large Millimeter Array.
