The astronomical institute of Leiden University in the Netherlands, established in 1633 and, apart from the Vatican Observatory, the oldest continuously operating university observatory in the world. Housed first on a university building in central Leiden, then in the botanical garden from 1860, and finally on the university's science campus from 1974, it counted astronomers Willem de Sitter, Ejnar Hertzsprung and Jan Oort among its directors and remains an active center for astronomical research using remote instruments and satellite data.
