An astronomical observatory in Chile's Atacama Region, about 100 kilometers northeast of La Serena at 2,380 meters elevation, established in 1969 by the Carnegie Institution for Science to replace its light-polluted Mount Wilson Observatory as its primary research site. It hosts the twin 6.5-meter Magellan Telescopes, operating since 2000 to 2002, the 2.5-meter du Pont Telescope, active since 1977, and the 1-meter Swope Telescope, whose 2017 observations first identified the optical counterpart of the gravitational-wave source GW170817; the Carnegie-led Giant Magellan Telescope, with an effective aperture of 24.5 meters, is under construction nearby.
