The first observing site of the European Southern Observatory, established in 1964 on a mountain at the southern edge of Chile's Atacama Desert. Its instruments include the HARPS spectrograph, one of the most precise planet-hunting instruments in the world, used to detect exoplanets by their faint gravitational tug on their host stars.
