The astronomical observatory of the city of La Plata, capital of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, with ground broken in November 1883 as part of urban planner Pedro Benoit's design for the newly founded city, under a decree issued by the province's governor and the city's founder, Dardo Rocha. Its first director, Francisco Beuf, had previously led the Naval Observatory of Toulon in France, and the observatory grew out of Argentina's 1872 National Meteorological Bureau, itself established at the invitation of American astronomer Benjamin Apthorp Gould.
