A short-lived sixteenth-century Ottoman observatory built in Istanbul under the astronomer Taqi al-Din, equipped with novel mechanical and observational instruments comparable in sophistication to those of his European contemporary Tycho Brahe. It was demolished by order of the Sultan only a few years after completion, amid religious and political controversy over astrology.
