A European Space Agency far-infrared and submillimeter space telescope launched in 2009 and named for the astronomer William Herschel, who discovered infrared radiation. It carried the largest single mirror ever launched into space at the time, 3.5 meters across, and operated until 2013, when its supply of liquid helium coolant was exhausted.
