The astronomical observatory of Naples, Italy, sited on Capodimonte hill and founded on 4 November 1812, described as the oldest scientific institution in the city. Its neoclassical building, designed by astronomer Federigo Zuccari and architect Stefano Gasse, was completed in 1819 and originally housed a 17.5-centimeter Fraunhofer telescope, the largest refractor built up to that time; today, as part of Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics, it takes part in projects including the Solar Orbiter and ExoMars missions.
