The Solar Orbiter mission is a Sun-observing project of the European Space Agency with a NASA contribution, designed to obtain detailed measurements of the inner heliosphere and the nascent solar wind and to observe the polar regions of the Sun, which is difficult to do from Earth. The probe was launched on February 10, 2020, from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and moves in an eccentric orbit as close as about 60 solar radii, inside the perihelion of Mercury, while its orbital inclination is raised to about 24 degrees. The total mission cost is 1.5 billion US dollars, counting both ESA and NASA contributions.
