The Satellite Instructional Television Experiment, known as SITE, was an experimental satellite communications project launched in India in 1975 and designed jointly by NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation. It ran for one year, from 1 August 1975 to 31 July 1976, and brought educational television to more than 2,400 villages in 20 districts of six Indian states. Programs were produced by All India Radio and broadcast through NASA's ATS-6 satellite, stationed above India for the duration. The UNDP, UNESCO, UNICEF and ITU supported it. Its aims were to educate rural audiences and to give India experience in satellite communications, and its success helped lead to India's own INSAT satellite program.
