MAVEN, short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, was a NASA spacecraft launched November 18, 2013 to orbit Mars and study the loss of its atmospheric gases to space, providing insight into the history of the planet's climate and water. The spacecraft lost contact with Earth on December 6, 2025, and NASA officially declared the mission concluded on June 3, 2026 after determining it was not recoverable.
