Mars Science Laboratory Mission

Robotic Mars Exploration Missions

The Mars Science Laboratory is a robotic NASA space probe mission to Mars, launched on November 26, 2011, that landed the Curiosity rover in Gale Crater on August 6, 2012. Its overall objectives are to investigate the habitability of Mars, study its climate and geology, and collect data for a future human mission to the planet. The rover carries a variety of scientific instruments designed by an international team. The mission belongs to the Large Strategic Science Missions of the NASA Planetary Science Division, and the Curiosity rover is the single spacecraft that flew it.
